Rochester Grammar School Students Thrilled at GCSE Results
Students and staff at Rochester Grammar School are overjoyed to be collecting some brilliant GCSE results today – with a quarter of all results a grade 8 or 9 (equivalent to an A or A*).
An impressive 10% of GCSE students set the bar especially high by achieving no grade lower than a 7 (equivalent to all A or A*) – and 15 students achieved some of the top grades in the country, with all grade 8s and 9s in English Literature, English Language, and Maths.
RGS students succeeded in spite of this being the first year in which all GCSEs are at a new, tougher standard, including more challenging content and questions. Significant changes to grading have been introduced, while assessment is now based on exams only, rather than coursework. There have also been additional exam papers.
Emma Beniston was a star performer in both her GCSE exams and in the AS-level Business Studies and Statistics exams she was sitting early:
- She achieved an amazing clean sweep of grade 9s in the ten GCSEs she sat, as well as two A grades in her AS-level exams.
- This places her in the top 0.1% nationally. Only 732 pupils out of more than half a million candidates had a clean sweep of the top grade 9.
- In addition to her academic success, Emma is a passionate musician – for which she was recognised as the Medway Young Musician of the Year.
RGS’s excellent results at GCSE follow hot on the heels of its success in this year’s A Levels and International Baccalaureate (IB). Nearly three quarters of RGS’s A Level students last week achieved A*-B grades. Students also achieved world-class results in the IB – with a third achieving an outstanding 39 points or more (eight points above the world average and equivalent to gaining four A*s at A level), and students off to top destinations such as Cambridge University. Combined, the Sixth Form achieved over three quarters of grades at A*-B grades.
Clare Brinklow, Head of School at Rochester Grammar School, said:
“We are absolutely thrilled for our students, who have achieved another excellent set of results this year – they should be so proud. Their achievements, particularly under the new, tougher GCSEs, have been nothing short of impressive, and we look forward to seeing them take the next step.
“A huge thank you goes to all of our incredibly passionate staff, who offer our students all the support they need every day. I want to congratulate all our Year 11 students and wish all of them the very best.”
