New Horizons Children’s Academy Awarded Gold School Games Mark
New Horizons Children’s Academy is delighted to announce that it has been awarded a Gold School Games Mark.
The school achieved the Gold award – the highest level awarded to schools – in recognition of its commitment, engagement and delivery of competitive school sport over the course of the 2018/19 academic year.
The School Games Mark is a government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.
New Horizons offers a broad range of sporting activities including eight sports played at both the intra and inter-school level and teams compete in ten external sport competitions. The school also fields ‘B’ teams in five sports and one ‘C’ team giving as many pupils as possible the opportunity to take part in competitive sport.
Pupils also have access to a range of extra-curricular sporting clubs and activities and are actively engaged in leading and managing sport at the school as team and competition captains, play leaders and part of the school sports organising crew.
To gain the award, New Horizons had to demonstrate that it fulfilled certain criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, with the school meeting or exceeding the required criteria for all three.
Jody Murphy, Executive Headteacher at New Horizons Children’s Academy, said:
“We are thrilled that New Horizons has been recognised for its achievements in sport and gaining the top Gold Mark is a real testament to the excellence of sport on offer at our school.
“We pride ourselves on giving pupils access to a broad range of enrichment and extracurricular opportunities as part of our commitment to transforming the life chances of all children and sport and a strong sporting culture is a key part of this.”
Stuart Gardner, Chief Executive of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust, said:
“Gaining a School Games Gold Mark is a significant achievement for New Horizons. For the school to have met or exceeded the required criteria to achieve a top Gold Mark is exceptional and reflective of the wider commitment to excellence demonstrated by staff and pupils in all areas across the school.”
