Students and staff at Newbridge Junior School in Portsmouth were joined by VIP guests to celebrate the grand opening of the school’s new site for its Year 6 pupils, The Bridge, at The Portsmouth Academy. Isambard Brunel Junior School took part in a pilot of a new project designed to teach school children cardiopulmonary resuscitation, more commonly known as CPR. Each year in the UK, 30,000 people have their heart stop beating, known as a cardiac arrest.  A heart attack is just one potential cause of cardiac arrest and each minute that passes without CPR decreases the survival rate by 7-10%.  Project HeartBeatz is designed to improve those statistics. The journey to becoming a Thinking School began with the City of Portsmouth Girls’ School being placed in Special Measures by Ofsted in April 2013. The school was sadly failing to provide a quality education for its students and outcomes were therefore poor. In September 2013 the school opened as The Portsmouth Academy for Girls as part of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust (TSAT), with the Rochester Grammar School for Girls (RGS) as the lead school.
