Personal Statement Advice

  1. Consider why you think teaching is important and your moral purpose. Secondary should also link to why their subject is important to young people.
  2. What research have you done that makes you well positioned to start training to teach? https://www.aft.org/sites/default/files/periodicals/Rosenshine.pdf is a good starting point. Secondary should show why their subject knowledge makes them suitable for a teaching position.
  3. What experiences have you had that would make you an effective teacher? There is no requirement that this be within schools, any examples of you supporting or training others is suitable.
  4. Why is your personality suited to teaching? For example, being organised, hard working and resilient.

Criteria

National Qualification

To become a trainee teacher in England, candidates must satisfy the below national criteria, set by the Department for Education:

  • have a grade C or above in Maths and English language GCSE (and a science subject if you are applying to teach primary)
  • hold (or will hold) an undergraduate Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) prior to beginning your Initial Teacher Training
  • have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the programme
  • not currently hold Qualified Teacher Status

Non-UK qualification requirements

If you obtained your high school or degree results outside of the UK, you will need to provide TSAT Teacher Training with:

  • Evidence of your right to work in the UK for the duration of the two-year programme
  • Confirmation from NARIC* that your degree is equivalent to a UK Bachelors degree with Honours
  • Confirmation from NARIC that your school qualifications include grades equivalent to a C in maths and English language (and also a science subject if you’re teaching primary).

Please note – we are unable to accept school qualifications that are equivalent to English as a second language at GCSE level.
