After 17 years as Principal of Brixham College, on Higher Ranscombe Road, Brixham, Mark Eager has hung up his hat with a warm farewell from both students and staff.
Mr Eager leaves behind a legacy of ambition, resilience, and a commitment to transforming life chances for every young person the school serves.
Mark joined Brixham College nearly two decades ago, saying he “saw a school with incredible potential and a community that cared deeply about its young people.”
From the moment he arrived, he embraced the opportunity to help shape the school’s future, driven by a deep belief in the power of education and the promise of every learner.
Reflecting on his time at the college, Mark says that being Principal has been “A privilege and an adventure, full of challenges, successes, and countless moments of pride.”
Over the years, Mark’s greatest reward came from watching students grow, achieve, and even surprise those around them. “Every decision, every late night, every tough call has been for them,” he said. “Watching their success has been the greatest reward.”
Mark’s leadership saw transformative milestones for the college, including the development of the Sixth Form, celebrating the achievements of its very first graduating cohort, and guiding the school through its transition from local authority control to becoming part of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust (TSAT).
He reflects fondly on how these changes opened new opportunities for the community.
Reflecting on his memories, Mark added: “There have been so many unforgettable moments, but what really stands out to me is how our community came together during the toughest times, especially through the pandemic.
“It was incredibly challenging, but the way everyone pulled together was nothing short of inspiring. What I’ll miss most, without a doubt, are the people: our staff, our students, our families.
Brixham College has never just been a workplace to me; it’s been a family. A slightly dysfunctional one at times, sure, but a family all the same.”
Mark hopes the core values that have defined his leadership will remain at the heart of the school: kindness, resilience, and ambition.
“Work hard, be kind, and never stop learning - those are the principles I’ve always tried to champion,” he shared.
As Mark steps into retirement, he looks ahead with confidence for the future of Brixham College under the leadership of Rebecca Blackshaw, both pictured.
“I envision the future of the college as bright and bold,” he said. “I’m confident the school will thrive as part of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust while keeping its unique spirit.”
Offering advice to his successor, Mark reflected on the human side of leadership: “Surround yourself with people you enjoy being with. This job is too demanding to be unhappy. And remember leadership isn’t about being in charge, it’s about taking care of those in your charge.”
Jay Davenport, Regional Director at the Thinking Schools Academy Trust for the South West, said: “Mark’s leadership has always been rooted in kindness, integrity and a relentless focus on what’s best for students.
“He’s built a culture where people feel supported to grow, where ambition is encouraged, and where every child is seen and valued.
“It’s clear how deeply he’s respected by the Brixham College community, and he leaves behind a legacy of care and aspiration that will continue to inspire us all. We’re incredibly grateful for everything he’s given to the school and the Thinking Schools Academy Trust.”
