Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month: Plymouth High School for Girls joins "We Are One" Event

In celebration of LGBTQ+ History Month, Plymouth High School for Girls, a proud member of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust, is thrilled to announce its participation in the "We Are One" event. This collaborative initiative, led by the Trust, aims to foster inclusivity, understanding, and respect for LGBTQ+ history and culture across all member schools.

One standout feature of Plymouth High School for Girls’ involvement in the event is the active engagement of its student leadership team.

Through open student led discussions, the head student team designed and planned what we would do ensuring that it truly reflects the diverse perspectives within our school community.  A particular feature was the scavenger hunt which combined learning and competition in a fun and engaging way.

Simon Underdown, Headteacher at Plymouth High School for Girls said:

"We believe in empowering our students to have a voice in shaping events that are meaningful to them. Their input has been invaluable in creating an event that is inclusive, educational, and engaging for everyone.

“Central to the "We Are One" event at Plymouth High School for Girls is a unique scavenger hunt activity organised by the head student team. Students will embark on a journey across the school grounds, searching for LGBTQ+ flags hidden in various locations.”

Ellathea, Year 12 Student, part of the Head Student Team said:

“Our goal is to create a school environment where every student feels seen and heard.”

“The scavenger hunt not only provides a fun and engaging way for students to learn about LGBTQ+ history and symbols but also encourages meaningful conversations and reflections on the importance of diversity and acceptance".

"We wanted to create an activity that combines learning with fun. The scavenger hunt allows students to explore LGBTQ+ history in a hands-on way, developing their understanding while having a great time."

The school community could not be prouder of the efforts made by its students to champion inclusivity and diversity. Their active involvement in planning and organising the "We Are One" event reflects Plymouth High School for Girls commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

As Plymouth High School for Girls joins hands with other schools in the Trust to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month, it sends a powerful message of unity, acceptance, and love. Through education, awareness, and engagement, the school hopes to continue fostering a culture of respect and understanding that celebrates the richness of diversity within its community.
