“Leaders and staff are united in their passion and commitment” at Meon Junior School in Milton says Ofsted

Pupils at Meon Junior School enjoy a ‘welcoming and highly inclusive’ space where they ‘explore and celebrate their differences’ – that’s the message from the school inspector in their latest inspection report.

The school, part of Thinking Schools Academy Trust on Shelford Road in Milton, was among one of the first within Portsmouth to be inspected under the new Ofsted framework.

Changes that came in to how schools are inspected in November 2025 saw Ofsted replace single-word headline judgements, of which the school was previously judged ‘Good’, with detailed report cards featuring a new five-point grading scale and a separate, binary check for safeguarding.

The report judged the school to follow “Strong Standard” for inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and well-being.

Achievement, attendance and behaviour, as well as curriculum and teaching were found to be delivered at the “Expected Standard” on their scorecard which is still celebrated as an achievement of best practice within schools.

“The curriculum for personal, social, emotional and health education helps pupils to understand how to keep themselves safe and healthy, and the importance of tolerance and respect.

“Pupils are especially well supported to develop the skills that will help them both now and as they grow older” His Majesty’s inspector said.

“Leaders and staff are united in their passion and commitment to the ongoing strengthening of their school. Together with governors and trustees, they have an accurate understanding of the school's strengths and where they want to develop further” they continued.

Praise was given for pupil achievement, with children being ‘keen to attend school’ with pride and confidence about what they have learned. In particular, it was noted that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds achieve well in school.

Meon Junior School work hard to maintain good attendance and behaviour and deliver a ‘well-sequenced’ curriculum where ‘reading is made a high priority in school’ which supports good outcomes.

Sara Paine, Executive Headteacher at Meon Way Federation that leads Meon Junior School, said: “We are incredibly proud of Meon Junior School and the strong recognition from Ofsted. The report reflects the inclusive culture, dedicated staff and ambitious leadership that make the school such a nurturing place for pupils.

“It is wonderful to see inspectors highlight pupils’ enthusiasm for learning and the strong support in place for disadvantaged children.

“We remain committed to working with the school as it continues to grow, strengthen and celebrate every child’s success.”
