Paignton Academy has proudly opened its brand-new SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) building and sensory garden at its Borough Road site, marking a significant investment in inclusive education that supports every pupil to thrive.
The £1.25 million project, which began construction in early 2024, has been made possible thanks to funding from Torbay Council alongside The Thinking Schools Academy Trust, with the support and expertise of Classic Builders bringing the vision to life.
The new facilities officially welcomed pupils and staff following the Easter break and are already having a positive impact on the school community. This development is part of the Academy and Trust’s ongoing commitment to delivering a high-quality, supportive, and ambitious education for all its pupils, ensuring that every child is equipped to reach their full potential.
This dedicated space has been purposefully designed to support students with a wide range of special educational needs. The building features a bespoke learning space equipped with modern, adaptable learning resources, intervention spaces for small group or one-to-one support, accessible toilet and hygiene facilities, and flexible break-out areas to help meet sensory, emotional, and social needs.
Complementing the internal provision is a specially designed sensory garden, including a safe and calming outdoor space that supports pupils’ wellbeing, offering opportunities for relaxation, exploration, and therapeutic experiences.
Derwyn Williams, Principal at Paignton Academy, said:
“It is a special moment for us to see this vision become a reality. We are so proud of what we have created – a space that truly puts our pupils’ needs first. The new SEND building and sensory garden are more than just facilities; they reflect our belief that every child deserves to feel valued, supported, and able to thrive. This has been a real team effort, and it means a huge amount to our school community.”
Torbay Council played a key role in supporting the development and has welcomed the completion of the project. Councillor Nick Bye, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, at Torbay Council commented:
"We are pleased to have supported this important investment in Paignton Academy's SEND provision. Schools like Paignton are highlighting the impact of inclusive practice and forward-thinking design. This development will make a real difference to young people and their families across the area, and we are proud to be part of that progress."
The development has also been warmly received by school staff, particularly those working closely with students who require additional support.
Simon Dossett, Head of Learning Support at Paignton Academy, said:
"This new space has transformed the way we can work with our students. For those who need consistency, calm, and a clear sense of belonging, this building is a game changer. The sensory garden offers therapeutic benefits, helping students self-regulate and re-engage with learning, while the classroom areas are fully equipped to adapt to a wide range of learning styles.
