Going the distance for their community: Thinking Fitness duo’s incredible marathon effort

Across Thinking Schools Academy Trust, our commitment to community is at the heart of everything we do.

With many of our schools in coastal towns and cities, it’s no surprise to see our young people feel so strongly about supporting the work of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Inspired by pupil voice, our schools and services are raising funds and awareness for the RNLI for our WeAreOne event ‘Community Champions’. It also marks the perfect opportunity to celebrate two incredible men connected to Brixham College and Thinking Fitness Brixham who recently completed an extraordinary challenge.

Kevin Smith, one of our Fitness and Lettings Officers at Thinking Fitness Brixham, teamed up with gym member James Pine to run the length of Brixham Breakwater 27 times continuously.

They raised more than £1,300 for the charity and for every mile they ran, the duo were joined by a different member of the Brixham community, which included four members of college staff.

Brixham Breakwater, which stretches for approximately half a mile, is a physical barrier in the town’s harbour to protect it from any destructive waves, so boats can be safely moored there.

Kevin is a former student of Brixham College. He spoke about his local connection to the town, and why he felt compelled to support such an important cause.

"I’m a big believer in challenging yourself to find out where you can be stretched and tested. I’ve never done a marathon before, and I like to do things locally as Brixham is where I grew up.

“The RNLI isn’t just important to Brixham, it’s important to the U.K. in supporting the safety of our seas”.

The funds raised will directly support the station by equipping volunteers with essential safety equipment and cover the operational costs associated with call outs.

For Kevin, the challenge goes beyond fundraising. It’s about setting a ‘positive example’ to the young people we serve, by teaching them the values of kindness and social responsibility.

“It’s important for Thinking Fitness to support the work of local communities because it helps to raise the profile of organisations while building strong relationships with people in the local area.

“We demonstrate the importance of giving back, showing respect for others and those who make a difference. To see Thinking Fitness actively contribute to the local area; young people learn the importance of making a positive impact within their own communities”.

Thinking Fitness forms one part of our unique services to schools through Thinking Solutions for Education; providing expertise, knowledge and support to leaders across our trust. These services not only enhance operational delivery but also reinvest into the futures of young people.

Nick Forward, Head of Business Development at Thinking Schools Academy Trust, leads on the strategic vision for fitness and lettings. He commended the determination and commitment from Kevin and James, with how they’ve showcased ‘the very best’ of themselves in the wider community.

"Kevin and James’ achievement speaks volumes about why our work at Thinking Fitness and Lettings is so important. We’re not just providing gyms and facility hire, we’re serving our communities and supporting them to lead active, healthy lifestyles.

“At Thinking Solutions for Education, we’re providing expertise to schools and reinvesting funds to improve young people’s chances in life. This charity challenge reminds us of what can be achieved through determination and teamwork”.

The RNLI are an official school charity partnered with Brixham College, and the charity’s important work is often showcased to their students; encouraging them to prioritise safety in the water.

Miss R. Blackshaw, Principal at Brixham College, highlighted how the money raised demonstrates to young people how to be active citizens in their community.

"We’re passionate about our values curriculum at Brixham College, with a strong focus on character and leadership which Kevin and James have demonstrated in abundance.

“Their achievement sets a fantastic example to our students about the importance of being engaged in the wider world, and it’s why we embed this learning into lessons every day”.
